Achieve a Slimmer Appearance with Liposuction
Dr. Louis G. Mes, board-certified plastic surgeon, is the area's recognized expert in liposuction and other body contouring procedures whom residents in Lafayette, Lake Charles, and the surrounding communities trust for their aesthetic surgery needs.
Sometimes even if you are at your ideal weight, fat may accumulate in certain areas of your body, such as your stomach, upper thighs, and buttocks, and no amount of exercise will decrease it. If this sounds familiar, then you may be a candidate for liposuction. This body contouring procedure, which Dr. Mes typically does on an outpatient basis, removes the fat surgically so that you have the slim appearance that you desire.
Some of the areas of the body where liposuction is used include the following:
- Stomach and waistline
- Thighs, hips, and buttocks (saddlebag area)
- Upper arms, neck, and back
- Cheeks and chin (removing jowls and double chins)
Who Is Eligible for Liposuction?
You may be a candidate for liposuction if you have the following characteristics:
- You are within 30 percent of your ideal weight
- Other attempts, such as diet and exercise, are not successful in reducing the fat
- You do not smoke or plan to quit prior to the procedure
- You have realistic goals and expectations
The only way to find out definitively if liposuction is the best body contouring option for you is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Mes by calling 337-504-4336. Plan on spending 1½ to 2 hours with Dr. Mes to review your medical history, your current health status, the medications and supplements that you take on a regular basis, and your goals for treatment. After completing his evaluation, Dr. Mes will discuss with you the benefits of liposuction and if it is a good option for you.
It is important to note that liposuction is not a substitute for diet and exercise to lose weight. Additionally, the maximum volume of fat that Dr. Mes can remove safely during a single procedure is five liters. In the event you need more than this amount of fat removed, you may need multiple liposuction procedures. Additionally, if the skin does not shrink back into shape after a few months, another surgery may be necessary to remove the excess skin.
What Happens During Liposuction?
Before Your Surgery
If you currently smoke, you will need to stop several weeks before your surgery is scheduled. If you take aspirin, NSAIDS, or certain medications and herbal supplements, you will need to avoid taking them as they increase the risk of profuse bleeding. Additionally, you will need to arrange for transportation home due to the effects of the anesthesia.
On the day of your liposuction, Dr. Mes's team will prep you for the procedure, and then you will receive either local anesthesia with I.V. sedation or general anesthesia, based upon what you and Dr. Mes decided during your consultation. Once the anesthesia has taken effect, Dr. Mes will begin performing the liposuction procedure.
The first step of the procedure involves Dr. Mes making a small incision in the area where he plans to remove the fat and injecting a salt water solution to prevent excessive bleeding and damage to the surrounding tissues. He will then insert a small thin tube into the incision and move it back and forth to loosen the fatty tissue, after which he vacuums out the excess fat. The final step involves Dr. Mes suturing the incisions and dressing the surgical site. The team will then move you to the recovery area.
After the majority of the anesthesia wears off and Dr. Mes confirms that you are ready, you will be free to go home. He will prescribe pain medications and antibiotics for you to reduce any discomfort and risk of infection. Additionally, you will likely need to wear some form of compression garment to minimize swelling. If your work does not involve strenuous activity, you will be able to return to your job within a few days. Within the first few weeks, any bruising and the majority of the swelling will fade, and you will realize the results of the liposuction in a few months as your skin adjusts to covering less area.
