Fat Injections Fill Wrinkles and Add Fullness
Dr. Louis G. Mes, board-certified plastic surgeon, is the area's recognized expert in fat injections whom residents in Lafayette, Lake Charles, and the surrounding communities trust for their aesthetic surgery needs.
As we get older, we start to lose fat underneath our facial skin so that certain areas appear sunken and the skin develops creases and wrinkles. If you have had a facial injury, you may have lost some fat in your face that has the same effect as fat loss due to aging. Perhaps you think that your lips are too thin and seem to disappear into the rest of your face. Fat injection uses fat from your own body to fill wrinkles and creases, as well as to add fullness to your face and lips.
Many people prefer fat injections to facial lift procedures since the injections are a minimally invasive procedure. Depending on the amount of fat that is needed, liposuction may be used to harvest the fat or a needle may be used. Fat injections are also useful for people who are allergic to synthetic skin fillers.
Who Is a Candidate for Fat Injections?
You may be a candidate for fat injections if you have the following characteristics:
- You are allergic to artificial skin fillers
- You are bothered by lines, wrinkles, or a sunken appearance on your face
- Your facial skin and underlying tissue are healthy
- You do not smoke or plan to quit prior to the procedure
- You have realistic goals and expectations
The only way to find out definitively if fat injections are an option for you is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Mes by calling 337-504-4336. Plan on spending 1½ to 2 hours with Dr. Mes to review your medical history, your current health status, the medications and supplements that you take on a regular basis, and your goals for treatment. After completing his evaluation, Dr. Mes will discuss with you the benefits of fat injections and if they are a good option for you.
What Is Involved in Fat Injections?
If you need to have a large amount of fat for the injections, Dr. Mes will likely do a liposuction procedure to obtain the donor fat. In most cases, the liposuction will be scheduled at a separate appointment. If only a small amount of fat is needed, Dr. Mes will simply remove the fat with a needle during the same session as the fat injection procedure. In both cases, the harvested fat is spun in a machine to remove any impurities before it is injected.
The facial injection procedure takes about 30 to 60 minutes. Dr. Mes will use local anesthesia to numb the areas where he plans to inject the fat. Once the anesthesia takes effect, he will use a very thin needle to inject the fat into wrinkles, lips, and other facial area. To fill large areas, he will inject the fat in a grid like fashion so that it fills in the area evenly and smoothly.
Since you are not under the effects of sedation, you are free to leave the office immediately after the procedure. While you might experience some minor discomfort, most patients report it subsides within a day. If needed, Dr. Mes can prescribe pain medication for you, but the majority of his patients find that all they need is an over-the-counter pain medication for the first few days. Typically, most people resume their regular activities within a day. The swelling will gradually disappear so that, in about three months, you will see the full results of the fat injection procedure.
Some of the different facial plastic surgery options offered by Dr. Mes include the following:
- Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)
- Brow Lift
- Neck Lift
- Facial Implants
- Laceration Repair
- Lip Enhancement
- Ear Surgery (otoplasty)
