Who Is a Candidate for Breast Implant Surgery?
While you will need to meet with Dr. Mes for a consultation to determine definitively if breast implant surgery is a good option for you, in general you may be a candidate if you have the following characteristics:
- Are unhappy with the size and shape of your breasts
- Are concerned that your bust line seems to be lopsided
- Plan to maintain your current weight
- Are realistic about the effects of breast implant surgery
- Are in reasonable good health, both physically and psychologically
- Are mature and do not expect that your breasts will develop further
When you meet with Dr. Mes for your consultation, he will discuss your goals for surgery, review your medical history, take pictures of your breasts, and discuss the options you have for breast implant surgery. In the event you have had or are planning to have a mastectomy for treatment or prevention of breast cancer, Dr. Mes will likely discuss your current health condition and treatments with your oncologist.
What Are the Different Types of Breast Implants?
The two main types of FDA-approved breast implants are saline-filled implants and silicon-filled implants.
- Saline Breast Implants are filled with a sterilized salt-water solution. While the volume of some saline implants is fixed, others have a valve that allows for future adjustments. In the rare event that the implant leaks or ruptures, the implant collapses and the fluid is simply absorbed by your body.
- Silicone Breast Implants are filled with a gel made of silica, which is a naturally occurring, metallic substance, which when heated forms a rubbery, elastic material. In addition to its use in breast implants, silicone is also used to make artificial heart valves. Numerous clinical studies show that silicone implants are safe.
During your consultation with Dr. Mes, he will discuss the advantages of each type of implant so you can decide which type of implant is best for you. This consultation will take approximately one and a half to two hours.
It is important to note that breast implants do not correct sagging breasts. If this is one of your concerns, consider having a breast lift at the same time you have your breast implant procedure.

What Is Involved in Breast Implant Surgery?
In most cases, Dr. Mes conducts breast implant surgery on an outpatient basis. Before Dr. Mes performs breast implant surgery, you will be given either local anesthesia with a sedative or general anesthesia. Once the anesthesia takes effect, Dr. Mes makes a small incision under your breast, under your arm, or near your nipple so that he can insert either a saline or a silicone breast implant. After the implant is in place, Dr. Mes sutures the incision and places dressing and a surgical bra on your breasts. Once he completes the procedure, you will be transferred to the recovery room for a few hours.
Most patients are discharged to their homes after breast implant surgery with a prescription for pain control medication. Due to the lingering effects of the anesthesia, you will need to arrange for a friend or family member to drive you home. While you need to avoid lifting and strenuous activities for the first few weeks after your surgery, Dr. Mes recommends that patients walk around every few hours to avoid the risk of post-surgical blood clots forming.
Most patients report they experience some discomfort for a couple of days after surgery, but any discomfort is kept well under control with medication. You will likely be able to return to work within two to five days after surgery. You will need to return to the office a week after your surgery so Dr. Mes can remove the dressing and your stitches. Any residual swelling or bruising should disappear in about four weeks.
Some of the other breast enhancement options offered by Dr. Mes include the following:
- Breast Augmentation
- Breast Lift
- Breast Reconstruction
- Breast Reduction
- Male Breast Reduction (Gynecomastia)
- Breast Asymmetry Correction
