Eyelid Surgery Can Refresh Your Appearance

Dr. Louis G. Mes, board-certified plastic surgeon, is the area's recognized expert in eyelid surgery whom residents in Lafayette, Lake Charles, and the surrounding communities trust for their aesthetic surgery needs.

As people get older, the skin around their eyes starts to lose its elasticity, which causes the skin to sag. Additionally the muscles and supportive tissues start to weaken, which leads to eyes that appear tired and bags that develop underneath them. Eyelid surgery, also called blepharoplasty, repairs this damage to make you appear younger and refreshed.

Who Is a Candidate for Eyelid Surgery?

You may be a candidate for eyelid surgery if you have the following characteristics:

  • Your facial skin and underlying tissue are healthy
  • You do not smoke or plan to quit prior to the procedure
  • You have realistic goals and expectations
  • You do not have a serious eye condition such as glaucoma or a detached retina
  • You do not have chronic health conditions such as Grave's disease, thyroid problems, or diabetes.

The only way to find out definitively if eyelid surgery is the option for you is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Mes by calling 337-504-4336. Plan on spending 1½ to 2 hours with Dr. Mes to review your medical history, your current health status, the medications and supplements that you take on a regular basis, and your goals for treatment. After completing his evaluation, Dr. Mes will discuss with you the benefits of eyelid surgery and if it is a good option for you.

What Is Involved in Eyelid Surgery?

Before Your Surgery

If you currently smoke, you will need to stop several weeks before your surgery is scheduled. If you take aspirin, NSAIDS, or certain medications and herbal supplements, you will need to avoid taking them as they increase the risk of profuse bleeding. Additionally, you will need to arrange for transportation home due to the effects of the anesthesia and sedation.

The Procedure

Typically, eyelid surgery is performed on an outpatient basis. On the day of your eyelid surgery, Dr. Mes's team will prep you for the procedure, and then you will receive either local anesthesia with I.V. sedation or general anesthesia, based upon what you and Dr. Mes decided during your consultation. Once the anesthesia has taken effect, Dr. Mes will begin performing the eyelid surgery procedure.

The location of the incision depends upon whether Dr. Mes is repairing your upper eyelid, the lower eyelid, or both areas. For upper eyelid surgery, the incision is made in the crease of the eyelid, so any scarring is not apparent, and the incision site for the lower eyelid is just under the eyelash line. The next step of the procedure is for Dr. Mes to remove any pockets of extra fat and tissue, repair and tighten the connective tissues and muscles in the eyelid area, and remove any excess skin. The final step of eyelid surgery is closing the incision using dissolvable sutures or tape. You will then be transferred to the recovery area for observation until the effects of the sedation dissipate.

Recovery Time

After the majority of the anesthesia wears off and Dr. Mes confirms that you are ready, you will be free to go home. He will prescribe pain medications and antibiotics for you to reduce any discomfort and risk of infection. As part of your recovery plan, you will need to apply cold compresses to your eyes to minimize swelling. You may also need to apply eye drops or ointments to reduce dry eye and any irritation. After 10 days, most of the swelling disappears, and you will be able to resume your normal activities with your refreshed, younger looking eyes.

If the idea of surgery does not appeal to you, Dr. Mes also offers a variety of non-invasive facial treatments such as Botox® and permanent makeup.
