A Body Lift Tightens the Lower Body

Dr. Louis G. Mes, board-certified plastic surgeon, is the area's recognized expert in body lifts and other body contouring procedures whom residents in Lafayette, Lake Charles, and the surrounding communities trust for their aesthetic surgery needs.

Often people who lose over 100 pounds find that they have excess skin that hangs from their stomach, back, and thighs. Other may have sagging skin in the same areas due to pregnancy or the effects of aging. The reason that the skin is so loose is that the underlying tissue has become damaged or weakened. A body lift repairs this connective tissue and removes extra skin to improve the shape and tone of the lower body. Body lifts are also used as a treatment for cellulite, which are dimpled areas of skin that typically develop on your thighs and buttocks.

Who Is a Candidate for a Body Lift?

You may be a candidate for a body lift if you have the following characteristics:

  • You are bothered by the appearance of your stomach, back, buttocks, and/or thighs because they are not as toned as you would them to be
  • Other attempts, such as diet and exercise, are not successful in toning these areas
  • You do not smoke or plan to quit prior to the procedure
  • You plan to keep your weight stable
  • You lead a healthy lifestyle and are committed to staying fit
  • You have realistic goals and expectations

The only way to find out definitively if a body lift is the best body contouring option for you is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Mes by calling 337-504-4336. Plan on spending 1½ to 2 hours with Dr. Mes to review your medical history, your current health status, the medications and supplements that you take on a regular basis, and your goals for treatment. After completing his evaluation, Dr. Mes will discuss with you the benefits of a body lift and if it is a good option for you.

It is important to note that a body lift is not a substitute for diet and exercise to lose weight.

What Does a Body Lift Involve?

Before Your Surgery

You will need to plan to be in the hospital for one to three days, depending on the extent of your surgery. If you currently smoke, you will need to stop several weeks before your surgery is scheduled. If you take aspirin, NSAIDS, or certain medications and herbal supplements, you will need to avoid taking them as they increase the risk of profuse bleeding. Additionally, you will need to arrange for transportation home after you are released from the hospital.

The Procedure

On the day of your body lift surgery, Dr. Mes's team will prep you for the procedure, and then you will receive general anesthesia. Once the anesthesia has taken effect, Dr. Mes will begin performing the body lift procedure. The surgery usually lasts three to seven hours, depending on the extent of the surgery.

The first step Dr. Mes performs in a body lift is to make an incision around your lower body, usually in the lower abdomen area. The next step in the procedure is the repair of the damaged connective tissue and the removal of any excess fat and skin. Finally, Dr. Mes will suture the incision and dress the surgical site. You will then be transferred to the recovery area until you are cleared to go to a hospital room.

Recovery Time

Since a body lift is considered a major surgical procedure, you will stay in the hospital for one to two days after the procedure. If needed, you will have a pump for pain medication. Once Dr. Mes clears you for discharge, he will give you prescriptions for pain medication, if needed, as well as antibiotics to prevent infection. Once you are home, you will need to walk around your home every few hours to prevent blood clots. Most people who have a body lift are able to return to work within four to six weeks after the surgery. You will see the improvements to your physique immediately after surgery, and you will continue to notice positive changes in your body tone for one to two years after your body lift.
