Tight, Toned Arms with Arm Lift Surgery
Dr. Louis G. Mes, board-certified plastic surgeon, is the area's recognized expert in arm lift surgery whom residents in Lafayette, Lake Charles, and the surrounding communities trust for their aesthetic surgery needs.
Sometimes diet and exercise are not enough to firm and tone your arms. Often this is the result of weakening of the underlying tissue, which is caused by heredity, age, or rapid, repeated swings in your weight. Fortunately, arm lift surgery is an option that will give you the toned and perfectly shaped arms that you have always wanted.
An arm lift tightens the skin and underlying tissue between your underarm area and your elbow. If you have stubborn fat deposits that do not go away with diet and exercise, Dr. Mes may recommend that you have liposuction along with your arm lift surgery. If you are bothered by loose skin hanging from your upper arms, an arm lift may be the perfect solution for you.
Who Is a Candidate for An Arm Lift?
You may be a candidate for an arm lift if you have the following characteristics:
- You are bothered by the appearance of your arms because they are not as toned as you would like them to be
- Other attempts, such as diet and exercise, are not successful in toning your arms
- You do not smoke or plan to quit prior to the procedure
- You have realistic goals and expectations
- You plan to maintain a stable weight
The only way to find out definitively if an arm lift is the best body contouring option for you is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Mes by calling 337-504-4336. Plan on spending 1½ to 2 hours with Dr. Mes to review your medical history, your current health status, the medications and supplements that you take on a regular basis, and your goals for treatment. After completing his evaluation, Dr. Mes will discuss with you the benefits of an arm lift and if it is a good option for you.
It is important to note that an arm lift is not a substitute for diet and exercise to lose weight.
What Does an Arm Lift Involve?
Before Your Surgery
If you currently smoke, you will need to stop several weeks before your surgery is scheduled. If you take aspirin, NSAIDS, or certain medications and herbal supplements, you will need to avoid taking them as they increase the risk of profuse bleeding. Additionally, you will need to arrange for transportation home due to the effects of the anesthesia and sedation.
Typically, arm lifts are performed on an outpatient basis, and it takes approximately two hours. On the day of your arm lift surgery, Dr. Mes's team will prep you for the procedure, and then you will receive either local anesthesia with I.V. sedation or general anesthesia, based upon what you and Dr. Mes decided during your consultation. Once the anesthesia has taken effect, Dr. Mes will begin performing the arm lift procedure.
To begin arm lift surgery, Dr. Mes makes an incision underneath you lower arm so any scarring will be barely noticeable. If needed, Dr. Mes will then use liposuction to remove any fat deposits. The next step involves sculpting and tightening the underlying tissues and removing any excess skin. Depending upon your individual situation, he may insert a drain to remove any fluid or blood from the surgical area to reduce swelling and bruising. The final step of the surgery involves closing the incisions and dressing the surgical site. After the arm lift is complete, you will be moved to the recovery area for observation as you wake up from the sedation.
After the majority of the anesthesia wears off and Dr. Mes confirms that you are ready, you will be free to go home. He will prescribe pain medications and antibiotics for you to reduce any discomfort and risk of infection. Additionally, you will likely need to wear some form of compression garment to minimize swelling. Most people who have an arm lift are able to return to work in a couple of days, and the majority of the bruising and swelling disappear within two weeks.
